Expert review of L'Avenida
Majorca meets Marrakech at this spellbinding boutique hotel in Sóller.
This hotel reminds me of a riad in Morocco. Built around a courtyard with a swimming pool in the centre, it has the air of a very hip oasis about it. I love the chilled-out atmosphere, and the eclectic décor. When I put it all together - price, location, architecture, interior, service, and food - it’s probably one of my favourite hotels in Spain. Unfortunately, it is shut from November through to March.
Location:
Right in the centre of Sóller (the town, not the port), and easily visited without a car as long as you don’t want to go too far afield.
Bedrooms:
For my money, these are eight of the best-designed, high-spec rooms on the island (and I say that even in comparison to the grand deluxe places). They have all the techie toys you’d expect of a place like this – DVD player, flat-screen TV, free WiFi, iPod dock on request. But, hey who comes on holiday to watch telly? What I dig are the hardwood floors, groovy wallpaper, fabulous antiques and signature pieces, 400-count Egyptian cotton sheets, walk-in showers and roll-top baths in the higher-grade suites, and waffle-weave bathrobes that all add up to leaving you scratching your head and thinking: why isn’t my bedroom at home like this?

Public areas:
The pool is where it’s at, surrounded by a wrap-around veranda furnished with sunloungers, big fluffy towels and parasols. In the house there’s a lounge that wouldn’t look out of place on a Wallpaper* cover, with its pony-skin arm Art Deco inspired armchairs and ‘grass’ pouffes. The perfect place to chill in style.
Eating and drinking:
Casual bistro food around the pool for lunch: think club sandwiches, salads and burgers. Tapas in the evenings, and a well-stocked bar for those all important poolside cocktails.
Leisure facilities:
L’Avenida’s excellent concierge service can help you plan pretty much anything - from restaurant reservations to private yacht charter or a personal shopper. Guests have use of the Agapanto Beach Club in Port Soller, and there’s a wellness room for massage, facials and body wraps.
Service:
Paul and Tania have a laid-back, can-do approach to hotel ownership, which means you can relax knowing you’re in good hands.

Price advice:
Sophisticated, contemporary style at this level doesn't come cheap. However, if you're traveling alone you can expect a €10 reduction on your room rate. Rates also include breakfast, soft drinks, WiFi and beach club access.
