Expert review of Hotel Fort Canning
A hidden gem on the top of Singapore’s Fort Canning.
Perched on top of Fort Canning, this newly opened hotel was once the base for the British Far East Command during World War II. It’s now been lovingly restored, but it still retains its old colonial glamour with original features like the impressive multi-columned façade. I loved the scent of ginger lilies in the lobby.
Location:
You can see why this was once a strategic military position – Fort Canning straddles the Central Business District, the Civic area, as well as the Orchard Road shopping belt and the Clarke Quay entertainment hub. There’s a hotel shuttle bus that takes guests into town. While the park itself is home to many music festivals and concerts as well as historical relics.
Bedrooms:
All 86 rooms either feature a city skyline or a park view. There’s a state of the art flat screen TV that can double as an alarm clock, and iPod docking stations are beside the bed. All rooms come with a Nespresso coffee machine and TWG tea making facilities and the bathroom amenities are by Thai luxury brand THANN. A naughty but nice touch, the bath is the central feature in many rooms and suites.

Public areas:
Set beneath the floor in a glass display in the hotel’s lobby, are archaeological pits showing off 14th and 19th Century artefacts unearthed at Fort Canning Park. While the lounge area nearby plays host to complimentary drinks each evening so guests can mingle.
Eating and drinking:
The newly opened Glass House restaurant serves contemporary Asian cuisine and has stunning views of the park. There’s also an Italian grill and pizza bar, a Lobby Lounge and Tisettanta Lounge that boasts an amazing wine collection.
Leisure facilities:
There are two outdoor swimming pools including a traditional lap pool. There’s also a brand new gym that’s of a reasonable size as it’s out-sourced and open to the public. The spa is the luxurious THANN Sanctuary from Thailand.
Service:
I found the staff to be enthusiastic and always smiling.

Who stays there:
The business traveller who likes to escape the rat race, or the active seasoned traveller.
Price advice:
This hotel bills itself as a boutique hotel, but I’d say it was more a small luxury hotel with design features. Generally speaking the hotel isn’t cheap, but when you consider that WiFi, breakfast and evening cocktails are included in the room rate, it's actually quite good value for money.
