Best for On a budget - Expert review of Pension Vergara
This rather hippyesque style pension is a refurbished 16th century convent building next to the Santa Cruz church. It's about as basic as you can get, but it's clean, cheap and cheerful, and very well-suited for short stays. Free WiFi is available throughout the building – you just have to ask at reception for the password. There is also a security box available at the reception.
Very well-situated on a quiet pedestrian street in the Barrio Santa Cruz, close to the Cathedral and Alcázar Palace. It's also handy for the shops and parks.
There are 10 bedrooms sharing the five well-maintained bathrooms (no en suite), ranging from singles up to one quadruple. Eclectic décor, definitely nothing fancy, but the rooms are comfortable and quiet. Pets are allowed but you cannot have any visitors after 10pm (there is a “silence timetable” from 10pm – 9am). Any paper, glass or plastics in the room will be recycled and any clothes left behind will be sent to a local charity.

The comfortably-furnished small common room on the second floor has a balcony with a nice street view.
There is no kitchen or food service, though you can buy water and soft drinks. But there are so many good bars and restaurants – in fact one of the best in town, Las Teresas, is just outside the front door – that this is not a hardship.
Young, friendly and helpful staff.
