Best for Luxury - Expert review of Gran Meliá Colon
The Gran Meliá Colón has always been a favourite haunt of bullfighters, footballers and celebrities, and even after its recent two-year restoration it remains so. You find opulent elegance combined with artistic touches – each floor is themed on a particular Spanish painter or epoch and all the room doors on each of the floors are reproductions of famous paintings. In the foyers you can see a painter's palette light fixture on the ceiling. I like the way that this sense of style and art – and humour – pervades, making this five-star hotel feel quite accessible and not at all stuffy. Though you know it's high style from its contemporary furnishings by the likes of Philippe Starck, Marcel Wanders and Edra.
Excellent location, just outside the touristy centre of town, making it not only perfect for getting to and from the bullring but also just to go shopping or sightseeing. Almost everything you might want to do or see in Seville is about a 10-15 minute walk away.
There are 189 rooms on six floors, ranging from standard doubles to deluxe and premium suites. Aside from fiddly light fixtures (a common complaint here and it took me a while to figure them out) the rooms are very nicely furnished in golds, creams and whites with luxurious black-accented bathrooms.

Grand stylish lobby called the Albero, which is the name of the yellow sand used in the bullring, is both impressive and welcoming and a great place to people watch.
The Tendido bar is on the left as you enter the hotel and serves light snacks and drinks. Next to the “lobby ring” you'll find El Burladero with designer tapas by chef Dani Garcia - I recommend the bulltail burger. For international cuisine the Majestice dining room offers a breakfast and lunch buffet, and dinner from an a la carte menu.
You can pamper yourself to the hilt here at the spa & wellness centre that offers massage, jacuzzi, sauna, solarium and fitness centre.
Black-clad staff appear a bit severe and imposing at first glance but are actually quite helpful and also English-speaking.
