Expert review of Hotel Espléndido
21st-century beach club in Port de Sóller.
Under the same ownership as the Hotel Portixol in Palma, this property offers a similar concept. Dating back back to the 1950s, it has been updated with the Swedish owner’s signature Scandinavian pizzazz: lots of light and energy while playing on the vintage seaside look. Word up: Esplendido will reopen on April 7 2011, with a glittery new spa soon to follow. The minute I get more on this I'll be reporting back, so watch this space.
Location:
Right on the beach front in the Port de Sóller.
Bedrooms:
A great range of rooms here catering to just about every taste and budget, some with balconies or terraces, others with gardens. As you’d expect of this particular group, the décor is fun and tasteful, without being overly designed. I like the fern motif feature wallpaper, the Danish armchairs and the use of colour – lots of greens and oceanic blues in the standard rooms, building up to hotter pinks and oranges in the suites – and the sense of well-being that comes over you when you stay here.

Public areas:
Two swimming pools, a flower and herb-filled garden, and a pleasant café, so plenty of room to find your place in the sun.
Eating and drinking:
A laid-back bistro serving Mediterranean classics, plus a hip, new bar on the harbour for coffee and drinks.
Leisure facilities:
Espléndido’s rooftop spa has a good range of treatments, including my favourite: the lavender dream for ultimate relaxation.
Service:
Rather cleverly, they have managed to combine a family-friendly hotel with a couple of child-free zones to save the sanity of other guests. One of the two pools is out of bounds to children, and if you like your breakfast in peace, you have the option to take it in the bistro (a no-go zone for kids until lunchtime).
