A well-kept secret, this centro storico boutique hotel offers excellent value for money.
Outside this great-value boutique hotel, the Rome of Caravaggio and Bernini is stuck in a delightful 16th-century time capsule; but inside all is warm modern design, with ochre bedspreads, funky wallpaper and whitewashed oak beams overhead in the rooms. The hotel spreads over two adjacent buildings, one of which is called the ‘Locanda degli Antiquari’, but to all intents and purposes the two wings function as a single eleven-room hotel, with almost identical décor and facilities. Service is friendly, continental breakfast is served in one’s room, the air-con works a treat, and there’s free WiFi. The downsides? There’s no lift and the street can be hard to locate (even for Roman taxi drivers); but its seclusion is all a part of Palazzo Taverna’s charm.
Location:
It’s hidden away in a quiet cul-de-sac right in the heart of the centro storico, just off Via dei Coronari with its classy antique shops, and close to Piazza Navona.
Bedrooms:
Funky wallpaper, strong colour combos and striking botanical prints are assembled here with real taste. The eleven rooms range from cosy to spacious, and all come with decent-sized bathrooms and free WiFi.

Eating and drinking:
A small continental breakfast of coffee, sweet croissants, fruit juice is brought to your room in the morning, based on an order sheet which you fill out the night before.
Service:
This is a small place, and reception is not manned 24 hours a day, but the ‘caretaker’ – to use the hotel’s own term – is friendly and helpful enough.
