Expert review of Hotel Piranesi
The same classy location as the De Russie – for a third of the price.
It’s comfortable, it’s elegant. the service is attentive and courteous, and it’s in a great central location, in the heart of the chi-chi shopping zone and close to cultural draws like the church of Santa Maria del Popolo. Perhaps the Piranesi lacks the personal touch that makes a good hotel great, but there’s a lot to be said for reliability, and in my experience this good-value four-star delivers every time. And then there’s the roof terrace: a lovely spot for an evening drink, with a view across rooftops to the verdant Pincio gardens.
Location:
Right opposite swanky Rocco Forte De Russie. Scenographic Piazza del Popolo is a short hop away, and the Spanish Steps (Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti) are just down the road.
Bedrooms:
The 32 rooms and suites are done out in a soothing Neo-Classical style with warm cream and gold tones prevailing amidst the classy antique and reproduction furnishings. I like the fourth-floor suites with their own private terraces. Note that, especially by North American standards, rooms can be small.

Public areas:
There's a rather conventional lounge, but it's the roof garden that really stands out.
Eating and drinking:
A good buffet breakfast is served in a pretty barrel-vaulted room in the basement. Drinks are served on the panoramic roof terrace.
Leisure facilities:
There’s a fitness room with all the usual machines, and a small sauna.
Service:
In my experience this is excellent: the desk clerks are courteous and efficient, and quick to organise taxis and transfers.

Who stays there:
Those looking for full hotel services and a premium location without paying the steep rates of the Rocco Forte De Russie across the road. During the week, plenty of business travellers check in here, attracted by the gym, the WiFi and the proximity to the Piazzale Flaminio taxi rank and metro station.
