Expert review of Hotel Las Aguilas
Incredible value for money and elegant surroundings in a stunning hilltop location.
This modern, stylish hotel with its huge rooms, great food and views to die for is a favourite weekend destination for friends of mine who live in the south of Tenerife - so I’m a regular visitor. The Las Aguilas is ideal for a relaxing getaway for couples, with the restaurants and nightlife of Puerto in easy taxi distance.
Location:
The hotel sits splendidly atop a sizeable hill on the outskirts of Puerto de la Cruz, and has panoramic views. The resort centre and beach are a 10-minute taxi ride away.
Bedrooms:
Formerly a timeshare complex, all rooms are suites and are apartment sized with oodles of floor and closet space. Furnishings are modern and good quality, finished in a bleached wood effect, and décor is bold reds teamed with pale pastels. Jacuzzi corner bath with shower, and large balcony or terrace, come as standard, as do the views. I recommend upgrading to a sea view for €10 a night for the panorama, but if you want winter sun on the balcony, go for a room facing Mount Teide.

Public areas:
The rather odd looking exterior hides an eclectic fusion of modern, ethnic and traditional Guanche themes and artefacts, which give the hotel a unique and chic style which I love. Lounges and cosy corners are plentiful and tasteful with bold primary colours against soft pastel, colour washed walls.
Eating and drinking:
A cut above your average hotel buffet, the choice is enough to send decision-making skills of even the fussiest eaters into turmoil. Chefs prepare food to order; omelettes at breakfast and meats at dinner, and themed nights travel the culinary globe. I sometimes have meetings here and always arrange them around lunch time…
Leisure facilities:
Set in its own landscaped tropical gardens, it’s the vistas over Puerto and the North West coast that really wow. Freeform swimming pools, a fountain and a duck pond provide the feng shui to go along with the view. On the downside, there are no spa facilities which is a shame - a Jacuzzi with those views would be fab.
Service:
An easy-going atmosphere prevails, with friendly, efficient staff and hands-on management.
