Expert review of La Fenice

Cliff-hanging B&B on the Amalfi Coast with spectacular views and a pool.

Positano is renowned for its expensive accommodation, so three-tiered La Fenice is quite something: reasonably priced, friendly, with a pool, and those views.

Location:

It's not in Positano central (it's about ten minutes' walk from Via Cristoforo Colombo) and it's just off the main Amalfi Coast road, so you might feel you're taking your life in your hands as you walk back late at night but, on the up side, you do avoid the bustling crowds. Then there are the steps… plenty of them. Costantino and his sons will help with the luggage but as for the trips up and down to the pool or into Positano - make sure have a good breakfast.

Bedrooms:

Most rooms (even the standard) have a view of Positano (and there aren't many Positano hotels that can make that boast) as well as a little balcony (big enough for a couple of chairs) or a terrace. Furnishings are simple, old-fashioned 'heirloom' style, while bathrooms are modern (not all have a bath).

Eating and drinking:

Apart from breakfast, simple lunches are also available – something different every day depending on what the garden has to offer: tomatoes, courgettes, fruit – salads, sandwiches or pasta. For special occasions (weddings, birthdays, anniversaries) you can also arrange for evening meals to be provided.

Leisure facilities:

A pool and a private beach? This place is blessed indeed. So far as I know, the 5*L-rated Il San Pietro di Positano is the only other Positano hotel to have its own beach.

Service:

Costantino is a charming host and his wife and sons do everything (from fabulous breakfasts and lunches to restaurant recommendations and help with trip planning) to make your stay a really special one.

Budget-conscious travellers looking for the Positano experience without the crowds. Not one for those who can't manage the steps – the hotel is on three levels.
