Expert review of Hotel Blau Porto Petro
Blau Porto Petro is a sleek and modern resort hotel with all the whistles and bells you'd expect of a five-star in a spectacular setting. Several restaurants? Tick. Spa? Tick. Various gardens, terraces and swimming pools? Tick. There's very little it doesn't have which makes it a great choice for a high-quality holiday that doesn't require too much forward planning. If you don't want to leave the side of the pool you don't have to, and there are easily enough leisure, eating and drinking options available onsite to keep you occupied for a long weekend.
Situated on the northern most headland of the Parc Natural Mondragó some of the islands most virgin beaches are within easy walking distance from the hotel. Going the other way, the old harbour of Porto Petro is a lovely place for a stroll - still flanked by the whitewashed fishermen’s cottages and leafy plazas - with some authentic fish restaurants if you want to dine away from home.
Blau Porto Petro has 319 bedrooms split into superior doubls, junior suites and villas strung along the coastline like twinkle lights. This is a lot of rooms by Majorca standards, yet the hotel doesn't feel crowded. Decor wise they are all are fairly uniform, especially compared to the more imaginative boutique decor of the public spaces, but, what they lack in designer flair, they make up for in space: all are 30 square metres or more, decorated in creamy tones with large beds, generous bathrooms and private terraces.
When a place of this size gets built along the coast, the first thing you can be assured of is a patch of private beach - in fact this hotel has two - framed by postcard-perfect palms and pines. If that's not to your fancy then there's also a couple of swimming pools with large, smart sundecks, various terraces and casual bars for chilling out in, and a rather swanky cocktail lounge in the lobby. All is done with a cool, contemporary feel that reminds of large resorts in the Caribbean. All it really needs is a casino.
Food and drink is one of this hotel's strong points and ranges from Alvaro Arbeloa’s gourmet cooking (think modern Mediterranean) at Galani, buffet-style ‘Ran de Mar’ which prides itself on offering something from every continent, top-grade sushi at Midori, and tapas and paellas at La Finca. Estels is a rather sultry New-York-style lounge bar, serving cocktails (and cigars), while Embat and Llevant serve drinks and more casual snacks round the pool.
Again, there's plenty going on here from various watersports such as sailing, kayaking and diving to a full service spa, swimming pools, tennis courts, beach volley, a football pitch, golf excursions and kids' clubs (from tiny-tots to older teens). It's also very big on good quality live entertainment attracting various local and international shows, dance troops and live music, much of which is performed beneath the stars.
Seamless and professional.
Understandably popular with families, but also has its appeal for couples from all over Europe and the US.
One of the best-value five stars on the island, with per night prices starting at less than €100 a night on some rooms.
