Expert review of St-Christopher's Inn
The St-Christopher's chain of hostels has brought a new clubby vibe to youth hostelling and this place has been a great hit since opening in 2008. New-build hotels are rare in Paris, new-build hostels even more so and this place is a striking addition to the Villette, replacing a19th-century canalside warehouse that burned down a few years ago, and is facing its vintage sister across the canal.
Both the plus and minus aspect of the hostel: on one hand the building is set right on the waterside of the Bassin de la Villette; on the other hand, once you've done La Villette science museum, park and concert venues, you're a bit far from the major sights, shopping and beautiful historic buildings of central Paris.
The hostel sleeps 300 in a mix of double rooms and dorms of 4, 6, 8 and a slightly alarming 10 people – all are mixed except for one women-only floor and have shower and basin but shared loos on the landings. It's bright and fresh if a little Spartan, with lots of wood, porthole-style mirrors and ship-style cubby hole bunks, with practical storage drawers.
There's a common room and internet space, as well as the lively canal-side Belushi's Bar, and a basement club area.
Continental breakfast is included in the price. It's also possible to have a cheap (6 euro) dinner at 7pm. Belushi's Bar serves up trad French lunch, while at night and weekends, backpackers meet Parisians here for tapas, beer and cocktails.
The small basement club at Belushi's programmes live bands and DJs at Belushi's, karaoke on Wednesday nights.
Enthusiastic and multilingual.
Young international students and world tourers.
Breakfast is included.
