Expert review of Hotel Design de la Sorbonne
This longstanding budget address recently had a brilliant designer makeover with a witty Neo-Baroque edge. Whereas some modern design hotels feel rather impersonal, here I love the way that they have recreated a sense of the hotel's past, with framed period photos in the corridors of staff who used to work here, seen in picnics, weddings and family portraits.
A great Latin Quarter location: the historic Sorbonne university, Lycée Louis le Grand and Paris's oldest cinema are all on this street; the Jardins du Luxembourg and St-Germain are just nearby, and there are good bus and RER connections for the rest of town.
Bedrooms are replete with acid greens and pinks, clashing turquoise and chocolate damasks, stripy cubic stools and an i-Mac in every room, and although everything is tightly packed in, it's been cleverly thought out. My favourite is the top-floor attic, which still has its original brass bed, a clawfoot bathtub in the centre of the room and ever-so-Parisian rooftop views to either side.

A bright new glazed reception area has added a little more space downstairs and there's a colourful breakfast room.
