A Neo-Classical gem overlooking Paris's great men.
This impeccably kept 18th-century hotel has a regal situation on one of Paris's grand set-piece squares. It has been beautifully redecorated on a Neo-Classical theme as befits its position overlooking the Panthéon, resting place of France’s Grands Hommes (great men). For those interested in Paris's literary and artistic past, it has additional cachet as the hotel where Surrealist writer André Breton invented automatic writing in the 1920s. The hotel keeps up something of the spirit in an going project with photographers, who spend a night here or at one of its sister hotels in the mini Hôtels Rive Gauche group, to produce a series of photos.
Location:
A prime Left Bank location overlooking the Panthéon in the Latin Quarter, with the Jardins du Luxembourg and St-Germain just nearby.
Bedrooms:
Bedrooms keep up the Neo-Classical style with toile de jouy fabrics and classical engravings on the walls, beams and moulded cornices. I'd definitely go for a Superior room here as they have amazing views of the Panthéon, while the slightly smaller Classic rooms overlook the courtyard at the rear. Fifth-floor de luxe rooms have a small balcony and spacious no.60 has a big terrace and views as far as Sacré-Coeur. All have sparkling white ceramic bathrooms, ample cupboard space and discreetly installed air conditioning.

Public areas:
The reception area and lounge get you straight in the mood with mahogany furniture and classical busts behind the desk. There's also a cellar meeting room.
Eating and drinking:
Breakast is served in vaulted stone cellars. The hotel has recently ditched the help-yourself buffet breakfast for a credo of “quality, freshness and taste”, with plenty of options à la carte, including Basque ham and sheep’s cheese supplied by Les Papilles bistro, farmhouse yoghurts, organic eggs and healthy breakfast cereals. Staff will happily serve drinks or tea in the salon, although most people go to one of the many nearby bars or cafés.
