A magical small romantic Marais hotel where an ancient Paris bakery meets Christian Lacroix.
Painted signs for bread and viennoiseries lure you into what was once one of Paris's oldest bakeries, transformed by Christian Lacroix into one of the most romantic small hotels in Paris, buzzy and languid at the same time. Spread across two linked 17th-century houses, Lacroix preserved the tall windows, beams and ancient baluster staircase, adding discreet air conditioning, trompe l'oeil effects and quietly luxurious touches. This is the sort of place that makes you feel instantly chic, as if you've been let in on an insider secret, yet at what I think are surprisingly reasonable prices, at a time when many quite banal places cost much more; just the place for a romantic treat.
Location:
On a narrow historic street amid the adventurous art galleries and fashion boutiques of the burgeoning north or Haut-Marais.
Bedrooms:
The 17 bedrooms each evoke a different mood or history. Some with high ceilings and ancient beams, others sloping attic rooms. The rooms abound in luscious fabrics and daring colour combinations. Some incorporate the designer's own blown-up fashion sketches, others a starry sky mural, Venetian mirror or 1960s chair.

Public areas:
The reception area in the old bakery is pretty with original painted ceiling, eau de nil sofa and swagged satin curtains. Stairways include trompe l'oeil bookcases and polkadot staircarpet. Next door, the old bistro with its zinc counter, found pictures and Pop colours has become a funky breakfast room and residents-only bar.
Eating and drinking:
A quirky totally Parisian bar that has preserved its old zinc counter.
