Expert review of Hôtel du Bourg-Tibourg
The sybaritic Bourg-Tibourg belongs to the tentacular Costes family and like the ever-fashionable Hôtel Costes was decorated by Jacques Garcia, but I find the atmosphere here much less show-off and the staff young and helpful. Thick velvets, striped satins and rich colours, tassels and fringes, lancet-backed chairs and carved doors give the sensation of walking into a private Gothic Revival melodrama, so if you like Garcia's OTT take on historic fantasy, then it's for you; minimalists steer clear.
In the heart of the Marais hub, well placed for Marais bars, shopping and the Centre Pompidou. Rue du Bourg-Tibourg is a fairly inconspicuous side street though the bars can get a little noisy at weekends.
Bedrooms are quite small and dimly lit but that only increases the impression of cosseting, with their luscious fabrics, tasselled lamps and plush upholstered stools. There are even little Gothic niches by the beds, set off by the occasional tongue-in-cheek leopardspot here or there. Salubrious bathrooms and bath products.
There's a plush lounge and a small, planted courtyard where you can have drinks in summer.
Classy though not cheap continental breakfast in the cellar. Drinks can be served in the lounge or tiny courtyard.
Staff are young, enthusiastic and helpful.
A hip young international set. Trendies and new romantics.
