Expert review of Hôtel Caron de Beaumarchais
Walking into this hotel is a bit like stepping into an 18th-century stage set, so it's a great place for absorbing the Marais's historic atmosphere. The hall, with its delicate wallpaper, caned sofa and a harp next to the reception desk, is indeed theatrical in hommage to playwright Beaumarchais, author of the then-radical The Marriage of Figaro who lived up the street, and I love the meticulous attention that has been paid to every detail.
On a lively, historic Marais thoroughfare, perfect for exploring the area's museums, bars and shops.
The19 pretty bedrooms are small but deliciously romantic and superb value, with exposed beams, sprigged curtains, antique desks and crystal-drop chandeliers, although they have also modernised with WiFi, flat-screen TV and air conditioning. Streetside rooms are slightly larger than those overlooking the courtyard, though might be too noisy for light sleepers.
