Expert review of Hôtel Bellechasse
The second hotel to have been designed by Christian Lacroix brings out the fashion designer's flair for colour and pattern with extravagant graphics over walls and ceilings, transforming what had been an ordinary Left Bank hotel into a fantastical cocoon.
Smart Paris: just up the street from Musée d'Orsay amid the antiques shops, fashion boutiques and ministries of Faubourg St-Germain, and just a footbridge across the Seine to the Tuileries.
Flamboyantly colourful rooms take a series of different themes from 19th-century gentlemen in a parkland promenade and astrological prints to a more 60s Avengers look. Although the rooms are quite small, that only adds to the feeling of cocooning with supremely comfortable beds and sophisticated bathrooms, complete with changing coloured lights as you relax in the bath.
There's a relaxed ground-floor bar with small patio.
An excellent buffet breakfast (good-quality croissants, excellent jams) is served in the cellar in a setting of motifs lifted from famous Impressionist paintings.
Polite bilingual reception staff, though can be slow when busy.
Fashionistas and cultural tourists.
