Expert review of Pod Hotel
A concept hotel that actually works, with small rooms but great touches.
When a hotel has a gimmicky name, it’s usually a sign to steer clear. The Pod Hotel, however, on the East Side of Midtown, is more than a slick concept with excellent amenities even in the smaller rooms, a good location close to shops like Bloomingdales and excellent stores along 57th Street, and close to the East Side's subway lines. This is a very very well priced hotel for what you get.
Location:
Right in the midst of Midtown East this is a great address if you want to be close to some of New York's best shopping and not far from museums like MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) as well as near the subway lines. I like this area of the city but downtown is more my scene.
Bedrooms:
Rooms vary in size from the very very compact Bunkbed Pod (with a shared bathroom) to the more roomy Queen Pod (still about the size of a cruise ship cabin but with its own bathroom), and all come with convenient touches like dimmer lighting, large rainforest showers, handy storage spaces under the beds, free WiFi and MP3 docking stations. One caveat: pack earplugs as the thin walls can cause some noise disturbance, especially on the weekends.

Public areas:
Nice modern lobby with cool furniture from the likes of Arne Jacobsen, Phillipe Starck and other choice pieces. I like the city views from the rooftop terrace too.
Eating and drinking:
The courtyard café is only open in the summer for breakfast but there are also lots of other restaurants on the block. The hotel is also promising a new chic restaurant so watch this space.
Service:
I wouldn't say the service here is outstanding, in fact it's quite hit and miss, but I think for the price one can overlook quite a lot.

Who stays there:
Young travelers, especially European. I think it's a really good choice for budget types but if you need space to stretch out it's best to look elsewhere.
