Expert review of Hôtel de France
A budget option in Monaco?! You’re right. They’re rare enough, and this is the best.
It’s in a quiet side-street back from the port in La Condamine district, where Monaco embraces an almost-normal life of affordable bars and restaurants, and shops that people actually need. It could be France, if the traffic weren’t so well-behaved.
I first stayed in this hotel years ago, when it was cheerful, chummy and scruffy as hell. The cheerfulness remains but a new broom has swept through. Downstairs is all bright ochre colours and a smiling welcome.
Rooms have been brightened up no end. Of course, they’re small, but they have most of the basics – TV, shower room and WC, hair dryers. They’re also clean and quite adequate as base for forays out around the principality. Some have small balconies over the street. The breakfast room wakes you up nicely with maritime murals and modern art.
Be warned though: there's no lift or air conditioning. Then again, did you really expect them at these prices in the richest little enclave in Europe?
Climb the stairs, open the window - and take comfort from the fact that the price of a night for two here wouldn’t buy you both starters in Monaco’s fancier restaurants.
