Expert review of The Betsy Hotel
Architect L Murray Dixon designed many of South Beach’s outstanding Art Deco structures but was clearly ready for a change of direction by the time he turned his attention to the Betsy Ross in 1940. With a classic Georgian four-column frontage and expansive colonial interior, the hotel is a departure from the Ocean Drive standard and, I believe, one of the most beautiful buildings anywhere in Miami.
Towards the much quieter northern end of Ocean Drive just before the street turns back inland to rejoin Collins Avenue, the Betsy has an enviable position still overlooking the ocean but removed from the manic foot traffic and vehicular logjam of its neighbours to the south.
Soft lilacs, violets, limes and oranges were chosen to lighten the Hamptons-style bedrooms that emerged from the hotel’s 2009 makeover. Oakwood floors, custom-made beds and cabinetry and large walk-in showers complete the airy feel. A partnership with a local bookstore means there’s a library in every room. Fewer than 20 of the 61 rooms have ocean views.
A huge lobby-cum-living room is the hotel’s heart, with wide colonial-style sofas and high-backed neo-classical armchairs set around tables featuring chess and checkerboards. You’ll hear unobtrusive jazz or somebody tinkling away on the piano. Tall, floor-to-ceiling windows allow plenty of light. Music-themed artwork, think period photos of Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton and Elvis Costello, adorn corridor walls.
Chef Lauren Tourondel has won many awards for the food at BLT Steak, which is always bustling, inside and on the street tables. The lobby bar is a popular gathering spot while below decks is B Bar, a discreet underground cocktail hangout graced by the occasional celebrity. Mind your head on the truly bizarre mirror-effect suspended ceiling that makes the room look twice as high as it is.
Peace and quiet is the essence of the courtyard and pool deck, where there is no loud music or party noise going on. There’s the Wellness Garden spa, a welcome variation from an indoor spa, and The Deck, a wide rooftop open-air bar and lounge that can get a little too crowded. There’s a good gym, too.
It's personal, charming and usually efficient, even if you have to ask a couple of times for fresh towels.
