Best for Romance - Expert review of Hotel Claude

Marbella's hippest boutique hotel.

From the Turkish limestone floors to the old Roman pillars, you know this is a first class place to stay. Walking into the beautifully renovated family home you step into an oasis of calm and style. A feast for the eyes, nothing is out of place and everything from the delightfully upholstered mauve benches to the rose petals in a drinking trough are designed to make you feel at home. The result of seven years of hard work by brother and sister Franz and Desiree – who both curiously made their money as traders in the City of London – this is, quite rightly, where Europe's fashionistas, film crews and flamenco stars hole up when in town.

Location:

In the historic heart of Marbella old town. Within walking distance of a string of good restaurants and all the old town's best boutiques, you are still only a five-minute stroll to the beach.

Bedrooms:

The owners have turned the seven bedrooms into wonderful escapes - seductive, well lit and comfortable, with stereos, televisions and a nice range of products. Many of the materials have been sourced from abroad. The roll-top baths and taps come from Fired Earth in London's Notting Hill, for example. I was more than happy when I stayed in my standard double in the attic.

Public areas:

The central atrium is a study in simplicity, with its ancient pillars and Arabesque arches. Off this lies a stylish reception area and a comfortable sitting room with deep sofas and a good selection of books from around the region. I like the fact that there is a selection of the latest style magazines, such as AD and Wallpaper, to thumb through, while waiting for a friend. On the top floor is the big surprise - a private roof garden with a variety of places to lounge about, read or sunbathe, and enjoy the tapas that is on offer.

Eating and drinking:

While there is currently no restaurant here, there is a short, but interesting enough tapas menu, and best of all a superb wine cellar, with a mixture of Bordeaux and Barolo choices thanks to Franz's interest in wines while working in finance in London. Full English Breakfast is included in the price.

Service:

Low key, but especially friendly and helpful.

Price advice:

While the rack rate is fairly hefty, you get discounts depending on length of stay and if things are quiet. The price does however include an excellent Full English Breakfast, tax and membership of the nearby O2 Wellness Centre, pool, spa and gym. You can even take part in the local aerobics and fitness classes as part of the rates.
