Expert review of Barcelo Marbella Hotel
Situated in one of Marbella’s poshest residential areas, it’s the size of the place that has the biggest impact on arrival – we’re talking a high-ceilinged, deep-red lobby, and spacious natural-toned bedrooms. Being adjacent to two Javier Arana-designed golf courses and housing a luxurious spa and wellness centre, this hotel draws a sporty crowd who like the finer things in life. And those who have a car as it’s not exactly in the thick of things.
On the outskirts of the Guadalmina district and being surrounding by golf courses, this out of the way location may not suit everyone, or it may be heaven if you want some peace and quiet. It costs about 12 euros to get a cab to Puerto Banús. There are some buses, but most people who stay here tend to have hire cars.
The Barceló Marbella’s bedrooms are bigger than most in the area and you can choose from a variety of suites, family rooms and double rooms. All have free internet access and views to the mountains, golf course or swimming pool. I prefer the golf view, personally. The neutral tones, fabrics and dark wood furniture are staples of a four-star hotel like this.
Spotlessly clean and fairly grand due to their scale. The bars and cafeteria are plushly furnished with cream sofas, beige armchairs, and huge black and white photos adorning the walls. Sadly, all are lacking in atmosphere and remind me of an airport lounge. You could be anywhere.
The hotel won’t win any major awards for its food as it’s fairly predictable and the lunch buffet is, in my opinion, over-priced and repetitive. That said, the terrace setting overlooking the golf course and mountains is lovely. The Augusta à la carte restaurant has a limited menu but the food is tasty enough.
This is where the hotel comes into its own for me. Deep breath, and here we go: two outdoor swimming pools, Jacuzzis, well-equipped gym, sauna, Turkish bath, subtly-lit wellness and spa centre, paddle and tennis courts, and of course access to two of the best-loved, and apparently most difficult, golf courses in the area.
If you’re impatient like me, dealings with the reception and bar staff might be challenging as they seem to have no concept of time; but they’re very friendly and eager to help.
Golfers, naturally. And business travellers who use the hotel’s large conference facilities.
Accommodation is good value for money but then there’s the additional charge for things like use of the car park (10 euros a day), treatments in the spa and taxis if you want to hit the town.
