Expert review of Villa Real
The Villa Real is part of the Derby Hotels group, which always fills its hotels with a fascinating mix of ancient and contemporary art. Here there is a particularly good collection of Romain mosaics. Although the handsome white building looks as if it’s been there for at least a century, it is only a couple of decades old.
Opposite the Spanish parliament building, Las Cortes, the Villa Real is a few minutes’ walk from the Thyssen-Bornemisza and Prado museums. It is also very handy for the tapas bars around Plaza Santa Ana.
The115 rooms, including 12 duplex rooms and seven suites, feature a lot of wood panelling and earthy tones, with marble floors and stucco features. The suites have saunas and jacuzzis, as well as balconies with splendid views - a great choice for a special occasion.

Roman, Greek, Egyptian and oriental artefacts are distributed throughout the hotel, along with contemporary paintings and sculpture by artists including Antoni Tapies.
The East 47 restaurant – with décor inspired by Andy Warhol - has an excellent reputation and is popular with non-guests. There is also a good cocktail bar.
No spa, gym, pool or anything, oddly.
Really excellent.
