In the heart of the Barrio de las Letras, the Alicia is a hip hotel where it is impossible not to have a lot of fun. An early 20th-century industrial building has been transformed into a spectacular space, full of light and life, by Pascua Ortega, one of Spain’s most coveted interior designers.
Location:
Right on Plaza Santa Ana, between the Puerta del Sol and the museum mile. Shops, restaurants, bars and cultural pursuits are all within easy walking distance.
Bedrooms:
The 34 rooms and suites are light and bright with big windows. Pale wood contrasts with bold splashes of colour on walls, beds and furniture. For a really special weekend, book one of the two duplex suites, which have roof terraces and plunge pools. In some of the other suites, the bath and shower are right by the window so you can take in the scene down in the square while you wash. All rooms have free WiFi, plasma televisions, top-quality beds and great showers. Some bathrooms are partly open plan, with the washbasin and shower in the room rather than behind a door, which might be an issue if you are travelling with a friend you're not on 'intimate' terms with.

The gleaming white lobby with its curving staircase gives you an instant flavour of the style-fest that is to come when you get to your room.
Eating and drinking:
A buffet breakfast is served in a bright space on the ground floor. No restaurant - but there are literally dozens of eateries in the immediate vicinity.

Some room rates include a day pass to the small rooftop pool at the sister hotel Room Mate Oscar in Chueca.

Friendly and not at all stuffy.
