Best for Trendiness - Expert review of ME Hotel Madrid
Are you an ultra cool fashionista flaunting this season’s must-have handbag? I have to admit I’m not, but I still really enjoy staying at the ME. Its bars and restaurant are really popular with non-guests, so you can have a lot of fun without even leaving the building.
In a landmark building on the Plaza Santa Ana, there are literally hundreds of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes within staggering distance of the hotel. Museums and shops are only a few minutes' walk away too, if you're ever up in time.
Rooms have plenty of gadgetry and come equipped with cocktail-making paraphernalia, set out on top of purple fridges. There are Aveda products in the bathrooms, which only have showers rather than bathtubs. Deluxe rooms are a bit on the small side at 20m2, while supreme rooms are 25m2 with a view of either Santa Ana or Angel squares. All rooms have 300 thread-count sheets and feather mattress toppers. Free fast WiFi with good desks and great Eames swivel chairs make it easy to work there too.
For more space and jaw-dropping coolness, upgrade to The Level on the top floor. The tower suite is vast with an area of around 150m2, with panoramic views across the city from the terrace.

The low-rise modular seating in the cool lobby is usually inhabited by sprawling models.
Even if you’re not staying there, I recommend a cocktail or two in the ground floor Midnight Rose bar or the Penthouse roof terrace, which are usually packed with a glamorous crowd. The restaurant mixes Mediterranean flavours with Asian influences, and does a great-value set lunch.
Guests can use the lovely Palacio de Santa Ana spa and gym, which is right by the hotel, for 30 euros a day.
Good-looking front-desk staff in minimalist uniforms are effortlessly efficient. Friendly waiting staff in restaurant. Guests can also get insider information on Madrid’s lively gay scene in the nearby Chueca area.
