Best for On a budget - Expert review of Gala
Opened in June 2010, the Gala is a great example of the new wave of no-frills, low-key designer hotels in Madrid. Owners Jaime and Almudena have clearly put a lot of thought – not to mention flair for design - into creating a contemporary, comfortable environment. When you see and stay in as many hotels as I do, it’s a real breath of fresh air to come across somewhere like this.
It’s on the second floor (with lift) of a 19th-century building right in downtown Madrid, a stone’s throw from Santo Domingo metro station. The Gran Vía and Puerta del Sol are a couple of minutes’ walk away.
The 22 rooms are all different and done out in soothing grey tones, and black and white geometric patterns, with wooden floors. 212 is the biggest, a junior suite with a leather sofa. There is free WiFi, air-conditioning and bathrooms have hydromassage showers. Irons and ironing boards are available too. Several rooms are triple bed arrangements.

There's a pleasant reception and lounge area.
There are coffee and soft drinks machines in the lounge area. Breakfast is not available, but there are dozens of cafés in the immediate vicinity.
You deal with real people rather than ‘staff’. Quite a luxury these days.
