Expert review of Wyndham Grand London - Chelsea Harbour
With its show-off marina, luxury homes and famous residents, I've always considered Chelsea Harbour the perfect place to set a crime novel - and this glamorous, 154-suite hotel could easily play a major part. The atmosphere is more international than London, more riviera than metropolis, yet there's no doubting the space and comfort of the rooms. Add in a high-spec spa, a respectable restaurant and efficient service, and you can see why it's so popular with well-heeled visitors who like to be close to the city but not right in it.
Chelsea Harbour is a moneyed enclave on the north bank of the Thames, midway between Wandsworth and Battersea Bridges. It seems isolated but two Underground Stations are a short bus or taxi ride away, while the Overground station Imperial Wharf is right next door. There is also a peak hour river boat service from a nearby pier and a car park in the complex (charges apply). Most guests choose to be here precisely because the hotel has a restful waterside setting. However, it is not right on the river - your bedroom views will either be southeast to the adjacent, gin-palace-filled marina, or northwest across the domed roof of the Chelsea Design Centre.
The star attraction of this hotel is its five-star suites, which are elegant, spacious and very easy to relax in. The design is well thought out and the decor of warm colours - pale lemon walls, russet and tan upholstery - unintrusive. Bathrooms are marbled with both bath and shower, plus - a rare and commendable touch - his and hers toiletries. The hotel has eight floors - the best views are from the suites on the sixth and seventh levels, along with a crowning eighth which has four extravagantly decorated penthouses. My favourites are those classed as Marina which come with a balcony and absorbing views of the river, marina and luxury residences opposite.
The lobby is a large, glossy affair filled with plush, mushroom-coloured armchairs and a miscellany of questionable art. There are a few upmarket shops and a small business centre behind a glass screen. Steps lead up to the curved bar and restaurant. The result is more swanky than tasteful.
The TwentyTen restaurant looks onto the marina and is a smart and inviting space with bare wood tables, chairs upholstered in blue and cream, and a classical-leaning menu with interesting dishes such as braised halibut with pearl barley. Wines are pricey. Breakfast is also served here, either à la carte or as a 'tasting table' (effectively a buffet with assistance).
The newly refurbished Blue Harbour Spa includes a 17-metre swimming pool. Facilities include a gym, sauna and steam rooms, hair salon, café, relaxation lounge and six treatment rooms offering high class therapies administered by experienced staff. Men will feel welcome here.
The uniformed staff and waiters are efficient; the spa therapists are caring and knowledgeable; concierge and turn-down services are included. Pets are welcome (charges apply).
Wealthy business and leisure guests, footballers, shoppers and romancing couples. The hotel is often used for top flight conferences, weddings and functions, and in summer also attracts long-stay visitors from the Middle East.
Rates generally exclude VAT. Breakfast costs £19 for Continental, £23.50 for Full English, excluding service. There is an extra charge for in-room WiFi.
