One of the most beautiful country hotels on the island.
The peace and quiet of Es Pla - the area which occupies much of the centre of the island - makes Son Julia the perfect place to kick back and relax for a few days with no real plan. Elegant and luxurious, the 15th-century mansion has been updated to cater to every whim of the 21st-century traveller. The tricky thing will be in tearing yourself away.
Location:
Situated about a 15-minute drive from the airport (20 minutes and €48 in a cab from Palma town centre), yet a stone's throw from Es Trenc - one of the island’s most unspoiled beaches - and surrounded by pristine countryside, the beauty of this seemingly isolated rural retreat is its easy accessibility.
Bedrooms:
I have two words for the rooms at Son Julia: big and brilliant. The last time I stayed, I wanted to sleep and sleep and sleep. Then sleep some more. A total treat after squeezing into cramped city abodes. Beds likewise are generously proportioned, with firm, expensive mattresses and high cotton count linens. In all this lovely space you'll also find plush sofas and armchairs, tall French windows giving to a balcony or terrace if you’re in a superior room, a cinema system if you’re in the deluxe room, a whacking 150 square metres of space and a Jacuzzi bath if you’re in a suite, and a super-king-size bed and marble bathroom if you’re honeymooning (there’s a super special suite for canoodling couples). You could be forgiven for not coming out of your bedroom at all, but it really is worth checking out the rest of this romantic hideaway.

Public areas:
Son Julia’s various living rooms exude grandeur. But my favourite thing about this place are the grounds: great expanses of lawn and shaded secret gardens combined with a series of tumbling staircases and walkways leading to hidden pagodas, terraces and patios.
Eating and drinking:
Don't miss chef Isaac Gonzalez Nieto's innovative Mediterranean dishes (with live Jazz on Thursday nights) at least one night of your stay. The other option is to hang out round the pool at the more informal Son Julia Grill (barbecue on Tuesdays) and tuck into salads washed down with de-toxicating fresh fruit daquiris.
Leisure facilities:
Two pools (outdoor and indoor), deluxe spa (a week of Ayurvedic treatments costs €705), mountain bike tours, tennis courts, meeting and wedding facilities.
Service:
Superb in every sense.
