Expert review of Stratosphere Casino Hotel & Tower
A playground for adults in the world famous Stratosphere Tower.
The highest tower in the entire United States at 1,149 feet, the Stratosphere dominates not just the Strip, but the whole of Las Vegas. On top is the adults' version of Circus Circus - terrifying rides that will give you near-death experiences by dropping you off the edge. The casino is huge and rooms can be among the cheapest on the Strip - this was one of the first hotels I stayed in. Play your cards right, and you'll get them for next to nothing, too.
Location:
The "Strat" marks the northern end of the Strip, and it's a hike to get anywhere - you can walk to Wynn in about 40 minutes, but I wouldn't try it after dark, as it's a sketchy wasteland that you'll be walking through. There is a monorail station directly opposite at the Sahara though.
Bedrooms:
The Stratosphere gets a lot of knocks from people regarding its rooms, but I think they're fine. You get what you pay for - they're plain, windows are tiny (you won't relish working out of these rooms) and they're sparsely furnished, but they're clean and you get unlimited access to the (free) laundry room. You get what you pay for, and you pay very little - although rates are close to those of hotels further down the Strip on weekdays, I've found they can be significantly lower on weekends.
If I had a choice between staying here or somewhere further south, I'd normally plump for the latter - but there is one way to significantly drop the room rate. If you plan on going up the Strat tower (which you should), it can be worth staying over for a night. Tickets to the tower cost $15.95 but hotel guests get two passes included in the $11.95 resort fee. Get a low rate, and you can secure the room for next to nothing.

Public areas:
Not great. The casino is sprawling and difficult to navigate. I always get out as soon as I can.
Eating and drinking:
I had a good meal at Roxy's Diner, a 1950s' themed rock 'n' roll joint, where the waitresses sing as you eat. Other than that, I'd only go for the Top of the World restaurant. Located 800ft up in the tower, the circular restaurant has floor to ceiling windows and it rotates as you eat. The views are fantastic at night, of course, but it's much more affordable at lunch - you can get a sandwich for US$15 rather than $40 and upwards, which is what main courses will set you back for dinner. Reservations are advised.
Leisure facilities:
I find the pool area quite sparse, and there's a small topless pool, Beach Club 25, on the 25th floor, too. But the real draw are the rides on top of the tower, which will shoot you skyward, hurl you off the roof and do other unmentionable things for the sake of an adrenaline rush. The skyjump, introduced this year, is an 800ft freefall (like a bungee jump) off the side of the tower, but beware - you pay your $99 fee upfront, and if you chicken out, as many do, you don't get a refund.
Service:
In a place this big, forget about it. But hey, it's not like you've paid to be waited on hand and foot.
