Expert review of Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino

Off Strip prices but Strip facilities - the Rio is a good all-rounder.

Off the Strip, it may not be in the best location, but the chipper little Rio has decent rooms – all suites – at good prices, sweeping views of the landscape around Vegas, and is less frenetic than Strip resorts. Plus, there are regular free shuttles into town.

Location:

On Flamingo Road, across the I-15 freeway from Caesars Palace. It’s about a 15-20 minute walk to the Strip that’s easy in the day, but I wouldn’t attempt it at night. Shuttles run every 10 minutes or so to Harrah’s and Paris.

Bedrooms:

All the rooms here are suites, and although they’re nothing fancy, they’re pretty decent – especially for the price – and they’re pepped up with bright colours, which is more than you can say for most of the other cheap hotel rooms in Vegas. The Masquerade Tower is the newer one, so aim for a room in that one.

As for views, it’s up for you – the Strip looks pretty fine from here, even though you’re looking at the back of the hotels, but I much prefer looking towards Red Rock Canyon and the mountains west of the city – it’s a spectacular sight that you barely see from the Strip. Either way, go for a high floor.

Public areas:

Not as good as the bedrooms. I’m not a fan of the casino – the part in the Masquerade tower is OK, but the main casino is squashed and has low ceilings – it’s pretty claustrophobic.

Eating and drinking:

The Carnival World Buffet is one of the most popular in town, although I have to say it’s not one of my favourites, as I find it a bit greasy. But most people love it for the huge variety of food at cheap prices.

Other than that, the seafood buffet is often rated the best in town, Martorano’s Italian restaurant is decent (I think the meatballs are better than the fabled ones at Rao’s in Caesars Palace) and VooDoo Steak and Lounge, on the 50th floor, has spectacular views of the city.

One to avoid: the All-American Bar and Grille. Rubbish food, and overpriced.

Leisure facilities:

The pool – VooDoo Beach – is pretty big (and comes with waterfalls as a bonus). It gets trendy, too – during the summer there are regular pool-side concerts and flair bartenders on hand (the kind that do all the showy stuff with cocktail shakers etc) – but it’s not pretentious.

The Crown nightclub opened in 2010, but it’s not at all trendy and attracts 40-somethings and over (having said that, it’s not aiming to be trendy).

The resident headliners are Penn and Teller in a new-build theatre round the back of the casino (shame they’re doing the same tricks as they were doing in the 1990s) and the Chippendales. If male strippers are your thing, these guys do it best.

Service:

I don’t rate the buffet service – they’re under-staffed, over-rushed and service can be infuriatingly slow. The door staff to VooDoo can be snobby, as it doubles as a club, and overall I tend to find the Rio staff less friendly than most Strip properties. Which isn’t to say they’re unfriendly – service standards for Vegas are very high.
