Expert review of Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino

A snazzy casino makes for modern-style Vegas in the middle of the Strip.

With its lofty ceilings, snazzy stripes and looming pillars, Planet Hollywood’s casino is possibly my favourite in Vegas – I love how it looks and it always has a fun vibe going. I’m not so keen on the rooms – this is a refurbishment of the old Aladdin hotel, rather than a new build – but overall, the feeling is one of the funkiest on the Strip. Regular film premieres also help to keep the glamour going.

Location:

In the centre of the Strip, next to Paris and opposite the new CityCenter development. You can walk pretty much anywhere from here.

Bedrooms:

The bedrooms are my least favourite part of Planet Hollywood. Although they’re jazzy with striped walls, psychedelic carpets and purple towels, they just feel old. On the plus side, they’re big, filled with movie memorabilia (I’ve stayed in a room with Errol Flynn’s jacket on the wall) and everyone I know who’s stayed there has been upgraded at check in. They’re comfortable enough too.

Public areas:

Fantastic. The modern casino is stunning and the vibe is young and trendy. I don’t gamble but I could still spend hours in here.

Eating and drinking:

Strip House is a well-regarded steakhouse, while Koi is a fabulous sushi restaurant. The Earl of Sandwich sandwich bar has free WiFi and its menu is very reasonably priced. Pink’s Hot Dogs, out on the Strip, is a cult restaurant bussed in from Hollywood. And the Spice Market Buffet is generally held to be the best on the Strip.

Leisure facilities:

The pool area is huge with plenty of space to sunbathe, although the pool itself is a bit small and bare for my liking. I haven’t visited the Spa by Mandara, but if it’s anything like its sister property at Paris next door, the treatments will be excellent.

As for entertainment, the resident show is Peepshow – a naughty burlesque spectacular starring ex Playboy Mansion girl Holly Madison, who’s become the darling of Las Vegas. In the fantastic, high street Miracle Mile mall, meanwhile, there are two theatres.

Service:

Informal and friendly throughout. Be nice to the check-in staff and they’ll most likely upgrade you. Valet service is appallingly slow, though.

Who stays there:

It’s a pretty young crowd – mainly under 40. It also attracts attention-seeking celebs (Jordan stayed here for her wedding to Alex Reid) and people who fancy a taste of the Hollywood life.

Price advice:

No resort fee.

Pros:
Central position
Trendy vibe
Fantastic-looking casino
Cons:
Rooms feel tired
Pool's pretty small
