Best for Families - Expert review of Augill Castle
Augill Castle takes the cosiness of a homely guesthouse, adds the finesse of a boutique hotel and stirs in a thought-of-everything approach of a luxury family escape. No wonder it has picked up a slew of awards. To me, it looks like a fairytale castle, set in run-wild grounds. The sturdy front door opens to reveal a gloriously rambling house, oozing historic charm.
Just outside up-and-coming Kirkby Stephen on the fringe of the Eden Valley, the hidden-gem secret of the east Lakes.
Contemporary but unfussy with the nice touches of sherry, biscuits and a teddy bear in each of the 14 rooms awaiting your arrival. I stayed in one of the quieter Estate rooms in an annexe to the main-house Castle rooms.
The music room is full of DVDs and toys, the leather-sofa drawing room with its adjoining honesty bar the place for post bedtime-story jazz compilations, good books and large whiskies.
Meals are served en famille in a grand dining room with a set-price fixed menu. No dinner available the night I stayed but the owners advised on the best local options.
With expansive grounds and fresh Lakeland air, who needs a spa?
The atmosphere is friendly and family run with an easy-going, informal air.
Families attending the Little Cooks cookery school, international visitors exploring the Lakes, first-time parents who earned a rest.
