Expert review of The Skiddaw Hotel
First things first: I think the Skiddaw needs to overhaul its whole facade - it looks tired and dated. Look beyond a mediocre first impression, however, and this palce - while fairly low frills - is a good, solid option for a central base.
The ongoing refurbishment of the hotel has already revived the rooms; public areas are next on the agenda in 2011.
This place welcomes children and dogs.
At the heart of Keswick on Market Street - you're 20 minutes to junction 40 of the M6.
The 43 en-suite rooms, divided into three classes, are now mdoern and welcoming with contemporary decor and some nice hoem touches. The Poet's Room has a striking turquoise theme, while family suites and four-poster rooms offer more space.
For people watching, grab one of the cosy, front-facing rooms overlooking the Market Square (market days are Thursday and Saturday).
The rather under-used Residents Lounge looks in need of a refresh.
The main restaurant, 31 The Square, offers a decent menu of hotel favourites with three courses for £23.95.
Otherwise, all-day snacks are available in the Conservatory Bar with a sunny glass area for people watching over coffee.
The hotel offers access to leisure facilities at its sister property on Derwentwater, the Lodore Falls Hotel.
Well meaning if a little hands off.
An older crowd, a bust day trade in bar meals and people going to shows at the Theatre by the Lake. It's also perfect if you don't have a car and want a central base.
