Expert review of La Villa

Gorgeous little boutique hotel by the sea on the tiny car-free island of Lopud, near Dubrovnik.

Run by a young, friendly Croatian couple, this renovated 19th-century villa opened as small hotel in 2005. The eight guest rooms have high ceilings, French windows and modern minimalist furniture, and breakfast is served in the garden close to the water’s edge. With a great vibe, a blissful sand beach nearby, and the chance to spend some time in Dubrovnik, which lies just a short boat ride away, this really is an idyllic place to unwind.

Location:

On the harbourfront on the island of Lopud. Regular ferries run to and from Dubrovnik (journey time approx 50 minutes), also stopping at the islands of Koločep and Šipan en-route. Fast transfers by hotel speedboat are available too.

Bedrooms:

The eight guest rooms are light and airy, with simple IKEA-style furniture, primary-coloured Indian fabrics, and lovely mosaic-tile bathrooms. As most guests come here for total peace, the rooms are without TV or telephone, but they do have air conditioning, a mini-bar and a CD player for music. Standard rooms look onto the garden at the back, while superior rooms have sea views at the front. My favourite is Green, with three big windows giving onto the harbour, plus an extra sofa-bed.

Public areas:

There is a communal lounge with satellite-TV, projector screen and small multi-lingual book and video library. The business centre has four computers, internet, printer and fax. Meals are served on a lovely vine-covered terrace overlooking the sea - west facing so fantastic sunsets too. The shady back garden, with an enormous magnolia tree, is ideal for reading in.

Eating and drinking:

I love breakfast on the divine garden terrace here – a typical Continental choice of cereals, yoghurt, fruit, fresh bread and platters of cheese and salami, with an endless supply of freshly-made tea or coffee. They’ll also cook you dinner on request – delicious.

Leisure facilities:

It's a pleasant 20-minute walk across the island to Šunj, one of Croatia’s few sand beaches. There’s a speedboat (Mischel as skipper) for transfers or private excursions.

Service:

The warm, relaxed, helpful and attentive hosts - a young Croatian couple, Dobrila and Mischel - are part of what makes this hotel so special.
