Expert review of Podstine
Tranquil upmarket hotel set in lush gardens overlooking the sea close to Hvar Town.
In a secluded cove backed by pinewoods, this peaceful hotel is built into a hillside and set in a lovely terraced garden with palms, Mediterranean shrubs, and stone patios for al fresco dining, all beautifully lit at night. There are 40 rooms, a small beach, an outdoor pool, a spa and on-site scuba diving centre.
Location:
The hotel is on the coast with views onto the Pakleni islands, a lovely 20-minute walk west of Hvar’s main square, following a pine-scented coastal path. When you first arrive in town, the hotel will collect you by minibus from the port.
Bedrooms:
The best rooms are the superior exclusives on the third floor – each one opens onto a spacious balcony with a table and two chairs, and a wonderful sea view. Standard rooms on the first floor do not have sea views. All rooms have big marble bathrooms. Some but not all of the rooms have WiFi.

Public areas:
For me, what makes Podstine so special is its lush garden planted with lemon trees, pines and palms. It’s a delightful place to have breakfast, with a lovely bathing area by the water’s edge, and an endless sea view dotted with islands and sailing boats. Indoors, the dining room is somewhat sterile, but most guests prefer to eat outside anyway. Free (but slow) WiFi is available at a public computer in the reception area and in the restaurant.
Eating and drinking:
Expect a generous buffet breakfast – cereal, yogurt, eggs, platters of cheese and ham, and croissants. Coffee comes from a dispensing machine, but you can order an espresso or cappuccino from the bar if you prefer. The restaurant serves a la carte regional Croatian cuisine at dinner. There are also two small beach bars overlooking the sea.
Leisure facilities:
At the bottom of the garden, there’s a concrete and rock bathing platform giving easy access into crystal clear sea – there are also plenty of sun beds and dappled shade provided by the trees. The hotel spa does reasonably priced beauty treatments, and has a small outdoor pool, gym and sauna. The Viking Diving Centre is also based here.
