Expert review of Ta' Cenc Hotel and Spa
Theoretically a five star hotel, with many of the facilities you would expect at this level, the Ta’ Cenc is in need of refurbishment, and by UK standards no more than a four star at present. Still a good place to stay at the right price, it is a complex of single-storey buildings in local stone that fit neatly into the landscape – and the landscape to the rear of the hotel is the dramatic Ta’ Cenc cliffs.
The back of the hotel opens out onto Gozo’s highest point, the Ta’ Cenc cliffs: great walks, stunning views over the Mediterranean, prehistoric dolmens (portal tombs), a haven for endemic plant species and an excellent place for birdwatching in spring and autumn (if you can handle the presence of bird hunters). I have even seen a snake here (don’t worry, Malta has no poisonous snakes).
The front of the hotel is on the fringes of the village of Sannat with its traditional church square and annual fiesta. A car, or willingness to take cabs, is necessary if you really want to explore Gozo and certainly for eating out in the evening.
The 96 rooms are spacious and well-designed but often ill-lit and most are now tired and in need of refurbishment; the linen/towels need replacing. A few rooms have been recently renovated so try to get one of these.

Comfortable lounge/bar next to the foyer and lots of peaceful outdoor spaces, pool terraces, and shaded walkways with trailing plants adding character and occasional colour.
In good weather eat outside in the delightful courtyard shaded by a centuries-old carob tree, or on the terrace of Il-Terrazo, which also has an inside area for cooler seasons. Both restaurants serve mainly Mediterranean and local cuisine. Quality seems to go up and down. I have eaten very well here, but have heard of others who have been very disappointed – and it is not cheap.
Two good-sized outdoor pools (unheated) cater for adults and for families, while the spa has a heated pool that is half inside, half out, with a swim-through doorway between them – a great option in spring and autumn. The hotel offers a free shuttle bus to a rocky inlet off Mgarr Ix-Xini. This is not a beach but the water is wonderful and it is a great place to snorkel.
Variable. Mostly friendly and helpful.
