Expert review of Rosso 23
This recent opening has provided a much-needed stylish-yet-affordable addition to Santa Maria Novella’s multiple four-star hotels, several of which are under the same ownership - smart move!
As the name suggests, the theme here is red, and there’s lots of it featured in the interior decoration, effectively offset by a background grey and white colour scheme. The tall, narrow 18th century building sports an elegant sgraffiti façade and a rather grand entrance hall with an impressive central staircase, but while the interiors have been given a contemporary makeover, the feeling that you are staying in a historic building remains.
Excellent. Piazza Santa Maria Novella is five minutes on foot from the station and not much further from the city’s main sights; San Lorenzo market is close by too. The piazza can get noisy, particularly on summer nights.
Even standard rooms are a good size and the superiors are really spacious. The best overlook the piazza and give you the same view that would cost you four times as much as most of the neighbouring four-star places; rooms 114 and 115 even have small balconies. Other rooms overlook the inner courtyard but all have super-comfortable beds made up with crisp white linens, duvets and fluffy pillows. Quirky detailing includes a red cuckoo clock, a red cushion, red dressing gowns, a bowl of red cherries… someone’s obviously had fun with this! The blue marble bathrooms (some quite small) don’t quite fit the rest of the design, but they are well-equipped.

Moroccan lamps decorate the public spaces: an attractive sitting area and breakfast room plus a small, pretty courtyard shaded by white umbrellas on the ground floor and a comfortable sitting room with an open fire and over-sized sofa on the first.
A good-for-a-three-star breakfast (including a made-to-order omelette if you wish) is served in the bistro-style breakfast room or in the small courtyard. There’s no restaurant or proper bar (although you can order a drink), but there’s plenty of choice for all budgets within easy walking distance.
Perfectly pleasant, though nothing special.

Keen prices attract budget-conscious travellers, but not only - this place is offering a really high standard of accommodation for your money.
This hotel provides four-star facilties and services at two-star prices. There's not much price differential between low and high season and it's worth forking out the extra 15 euros or so for a room at the front of the building with full-on views of Santa Maria Novella's magnificent façade. WiFi throughout the building is free; parking in a nearby private garage is extra.
