Expert review of Relais Grand Tour
Delightful San Lorenzo b&b offering great value for money.
This is one of my favourites, a b&b that gets it right for once. Owners Giuseppe and Cristina have restored their 16th century house with loving care and transformed in to the sort of b&b that you would find in Britain and that is all-too-rare in Italy. They live on the first floor and treat guests as visitors to their own home; many leave as friends. I particularly admire the overall attention to detail and the thoughtful extras that are included in the price.
Location:
The house stands on a quiet residential street about five minute on foot north of the San Lorenzo market in a characteristic old neighbourhood.
Bedrooms:
There are two levels of rooms here and prices vary accordingly. The three first floor rooms are cosy and charming with floral fabrics and pretty tiled bathrooms while the four larger ground floor, loosely themed suites are really quite luxurious. The romantic mirrors suite, for example, is full of antique mirrors and has a whirlpool bath; it’s much loved by honeymooners. The two-room foyer apartment has a beautiful original coffered ceiling, a kitchenette and a double whirlpool bath in the living room.
Beds are made up with beautiful old linens and the rooms and bathrooms are filled with carefully chosen antiques, old majolica tiles, pictures and curios that give the place a really homely feel. All have tea and coffee making facilities plus biscuits, jams and free water. The suites are supplied with a PC and (free) internet access.

Public areas:
There’s a tiny reception area with a computer for guests' use and a small but pretty flower-filled patio on the ground floor, a refuge after a hot day’s sightseeing.
Eating and drinking:
A voucher for a simple breakfast at a local bar is included in the price. Guests staying in the first floor rooms can also opt for the 15 euro super breakfast (a generous spread of warm pastries, yoghurt and cereals, fresh fruit, proper coffee etc), served in the owner’s own dining room.
Service:
Giuseppe and Cristina do a great job of welcoming people into their home and are a mine of local information.

Who stays there:
A real mix of nationalities and age groups. Lots of return guests.
Price advice:
Room prices vary little during the year, but they are all great value; even the largest suites. A voucher for a generous breakfast at the local bar is included in the room rate; there's also an option for a 15 euro in-house breakfast for first floor rooms.
