Small-scale country hotel with superb home cooking, in the secluded village of Estellencs.

This pretty old farmhouse has been carefully restored to provide a place that has a contemporary feel yet retains its character. I love the intimacy of the place (it’s more like staying at someone’s rather lovely home than at a hotel) and the tranquillity.

Location:

You’ll find Hotel Rural Nord in the tiny stone village of Estellencs, notable mainly as a place to hike, bird watch and do nothing. The shingle beach (a 2km walk away) is wonderfully secluded for skinny dippers.

Bedrooms:

All eight rooms have traditional terracotta-tiled floors, painted wood ceilings and large beds draped in soft, creamy linens. All have en-suite bathrooms, are light, airy and well sized, making this a realistic option for holing up in for a few days without going stir crazy.

Public areas:

I love the courtyard here, with its birds of paradise flowers and the old olive press just off it that serves as a kind of summer lounge. There’s a very pretty flower-filled living room with an open fireplace for the chillier months (one of my favoured times for hiking) and terraces for sunbathing.

Eating and drinking:

Breakfast is typical Majorcan fare: rough brown bread, tomatoes, jams, cheese and charcuterie, all of it local produce. The restaurant is rather smart, and home-cooked food is served here daily. You need to order in advance, and it’s well worth doing so.

Friendly and always with a smile.
