Best for On a budget - Expert review of Smart City Hostels Edinburgh
The Smart City hostel sets the bar high for budget accomodation in Edinburgh. Just off The Royal Mile, the location is excellent as is the hostel itself. The light bright reception with exposed brick wall, tiled floor and vast glass arched windows give a good first impression. Clean, well thought out with lots of room options to suit all travellers. A well equipped communal kitchen lets you dish up your own grub but there is a well priced canteen style cafe and newly refurbed (August 2010) bar - Bar 50 - too. The roof terrace and courtyard are favourite places to hang out in the summer months, and all year for the diehard smoker. There are plenty of lockers and storage for cycles and bags along with 24 hour management on site and a mobile phone charging station. This is a great budget option.
On Blackfriars Street in Edinburgh's historic old town. Right beside the Scottish Parliament, The Scotsman newspaper office, Dynamic Earth (a favourite with the kids), The Pleasance (for some great festival action) and across the road from the BBC and a Pizza Express. It's a three minute walk to the Royal Mile, five minutes to Princes Street, one minute to Holyrood Palace. Just moments from loads of bars and restaurants and in the other direction, Holyrood Park is a great place to clear the head and stretch the legs.
There are 620 bedrooms in a number of different configurations. The bigger the dorm the better the rate. You'll find dorms for up to 12, some family rooms, smartcitygirl dorms with full length mirrors and great hairdryers, and doubles - all ensuite with linen and towels included. Each bed has its own locker, which fits a medium backpack – you need your own lock. Inside the rooms are bright carpets, steel constructed bunk beds and light-coloured walls. In addition to the ensuite bathrooms there are communal bathrooms dotted around. Everything is very bright, clean and well looked after.

The courtyard and roof terrace are real bonuses in the summer and for smokers.
Smart City Cafe - breakfast is served here and it is open until 1am every day serving lunch, dinner, and snacks. There's a good selection of food for veggies, gluten free options and all the usual suspects too. Served in canteen, self-service style.
Bar 50 has just had a refurb and is the main meeting area, there is always a buzz about it. Pool tables, TV, karaoke and quizzes are also part of life in the hostel as well as free shows during August for the festival. Sociable and fun.
A large well equipped communal kitchen is available too.
Pool tables, karaoke, large screen TV.
Casual, laid back and efficient. There is 24 security and management and access to floors and bedrooms is by keycard so security is tight.
