An Edinburgh institution that has been recently refurbished and relaunched.
The George is an elegant Edinburgh stalwart. Recently refurbished, it is shiny, new and a great place to stay. Many rooms have views of the castle or the Firth of Forth. It has elegant rooms and a popular restaurant and bar.
Location:
In the middle of the best shopping street in Edinburgh and surrounded by excellent bars and restaurants with good views to boot. Perfect. Edinburgh Waverley Train Station is a quick walk away.
Bedrooms:
Each of the 249 rooms has a plasma TV and broadband. They've all been recently done out in aubergines, creams and taupes: elegant and well thought out. Ask for a south facing room as chances are you'll look out over Edinburgh Castle. To the north you'll see over the Firth of Forth to Fife, so either way you won't suffer.

Public areas:
The Tempus bar is popular with locals as well as residents; it's the obvious place to meet up with friends or read the paper whilst your other half gets ready.
Eating and drinking:
The aforementioned Tempus is a great cocktail bar with a good atmosphere. You can also dine here and the Sunday lunches are well worth indulging in. Lofty ceilings and chandeliers are evidence of the historical building which marries well with the more modern touches of dark wood floor, glass, mirrored surfaces and leather booths. There is outside seating on George Street when the weather allows, which is great for people watching.
