Expert review of Rowton Hall Hotel
I really like this country house hotel, built in 1779, with its chandeliers, original oak staircase, new spa and acres of gardens. It’s small enough to be personal and the reception, with old wooden panelling and original gun cupboards - from when the building was a hunting lodge – is a pleasant and surprising welcome.
A 10-minute drive from Chester city centre, the hotel and its eight acres of grounds can be found to the south of the city down a narrow country lane. A taxi will cost around £5 each way.
Considering the age of the place, the rooms at Rowton Hall Hotel are a mix of modern and traditional, but all are great to look at. Individually styled and decorated, there are flashes of bold colour in some rooms, bang up-to-date patterned wallpaper in others, grand four-posters in others. No surprises then that the owner’s wife is an interior decorator.
There are only 37 bedrooms at Rowton Hall Hotel, eight of which are junior suites and three master suites – the “standard” are labelled “luxury”. The Henrietta Maria master suite, decked out in mirrored furniture, modern floral wallpaper and featuring a separate lounge, is my personal favourite. I like that the team try to “match” the modern or traditional rooms to guests, but make your preference clear anyway.
Views range from the lush gardens to, sometimes industrial, internal vistas – worth stating your desires here too.

The hotel’s grounds, including a heli-pad, are large and pleasant. The lounge bar – for when the weather is less agreeable – is cosy, bright and spacious though it can be a little soulless at quieter times. Coffees can be taken with free WiFi in the conservatory, though wedding functions will often utilise this space – the hotel is a very popular wedding venue.
The Langdale Restaurant is popular with both residents and locals, and some of the herbs and veg from the gardens make their way on to the menus.
The health club is free for guests and both the well-equipped gym and the swimming pool overlook the gardens. There are also tennis courts and a relaxing spa.
Leisure guests mostly, and many wedding parties.
Many rates are room only; breakfast costs £12.50 or £9.50. Check prices above to find decent rates for bed and breakfast too.
