Expert review of Radisson Blu Beke Hotel

Large, well-equipped hotel conveniently located on Budapest's Great Boulevard.

At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a famously fashionable hotel – the Britannia – on this site. The Radisson Blu Béke nods towards that history with a few characterful original features. Broadly, though, this is a well-equipped, big beast of a modern hotel – with 239 rooms and eight suites – in a convenient (if unpretty) location.

Location:

The rooms are divided between four categories – standard, superior, business class and suites – and spread over seven floors. They are comfortable, satisfactory in size, and decorated in neutral colours that are unlikely either to offend or significantly excite. You’ll find all the amenities you need, including free wireless access and air conditioning. Those in business class rooms and suites can use the business centre, and also have Nespresso coffee machines in their rooms (rather than the bog-standard kettle and instant sachets).

Bedrooms:

The hotel has preserved the building’s original, grand façade and the Zsolnay Café is faithful to the same spirit; there are frescoes by early-20th-century artist Jenő Haranghy. Largely, though, this is a hotel that is modern in style.

Eating and drinking:

Olive’s Restaurant specialises in Italian cuisine, and has an open kitchen and a cheerful décor featuring hanging foliage and yellow table cloths. The atmospheric Zsolnay Café is named after the Zsolnay porcelain produced in the city of Pécs – the same company responsible for the colourful majolica roof tiles you’ll find on the roofs of the Great Market Hall and the Matthias Church – and serves posh coffees, light snacks and cakes.

Leisure facilities:

These are good – there’s a swimming pool, fitness centre, sauna and solarium.

Service:

I’ve never had any problems with service here.
