Expert review of Hotel Papillon
If you don’t mind a bit of a muscle-burning walk up Rózsadomb (Rose Hill), this is a cheerful choice. There’s a villa-style feel to the building, a garden in which to relax with a beer, a rooftop terrace with good city views, and a welcoming owner.
Rose Hill rises a short distance to the north of Castle Hill, on the Buda river bank, and the hotel is at the top – this isn’t one for those averse to a bit of exercise. Trams 4 and 6 going over to Pest run along the main road at the base of the hill; alternatively you can get the metro under the river from Batthyány tér, which is a short walk away.
The rooms are clean and well-kept, the walls painted white with blue carpet on the floor. There are 30 rooms (including some triples), and apartments (with kitchenettes) on the first floor. You’ll find a small TV, fridge and telephone in each room; apartments come with a parking space.
There’s a plain restaurant serving home-cooked Hungarian and international food at very reasonable prices.
The garden holds a small swimming pool, and there’s an area where guests can play badminton.
The owners are very welcoming and eager to please.
Primarily tourists, although you might find the occasional business person who prefers a hotel with more character.
