Expert review of Danubius Health Spa Resort Helia
Generally if you think ‘spa hotel’ then you think luxury at every turn, pampering in every corner – and an extravagant price tag to match. The Helia lacks grandeur in its trimmings – it’s unpretty from the outside, and the interior is functional rather than full of fancy – but the wellness facilities and treatments are top class.
The Helia sits slightly to the north of the very centre of Pest, looking over the river on to Margaret Island. It’s a 15-minute walk or so to Kossuth tér and the Parliament; alternatively, you can take Metro 3 from nearby Dózsa György út station to Deák tér in under ten minutes.
There are 254 standard and superior rooms – the latter facing the Danube – and eight suites. Rooms are compact and clean, with patterned green carpet and orange-brown curtains in a swirling design. Bathrooms are on the small side, with a shower head over the bath. WiFi is offered throughout the hotel, and there are in-room coffee-making facilities.

The open lobby area is bright and functional. The public areas generally have a ‘conference-hotel’ feel to them – indeed, one floor is dedicated to conferences (with nine rooms, the largest of which can hold 400).
The spacious Restaurant Jupiter is pleasant, serving a range of traditional, international and healthy dishes. There’s a café and bar area in one section of the lobby, and there’s frequently live piano and cimbalom music to entertain the guests. A large outdoor terrace is open during summer months.
The spa facilities are the hotel’s raison d’être. The spa area contains a swimming pool, baths of thermal water pumped from Margaret Island, a sauna, an infra-sauna, a Jacuzzi and a well-equipped fitness centre. The thermal water is beneficial in the treatment of a variety of conditions, but can also be used simply as an aid to relaxation, and there are mud packs, massages, pedicures and other pampering options to choose from. A medical team is based on site, and specific packages can be tailored to your requirements. While treatments will cost extra, the use of the pools and other standard facilities in the spa centre are included in the price of the room.
I’ve found the service good during my stays here.
