Expert review of Continental Hotel Zara
The Continental Hotel is the second in the Zara chain to hit Budapest – newer and bigger than its sister (the Boutique Hotel Zara on Só utca), and with a restaurant and swimming pool. It’s sleek and well designed, with a style that blends Art Nouveau and Art Deco influences.
Located on the slightly tatty Dohány utca in the Jewish District, the hotel is just inside the Great Boulevard and near the Great Synagogue. It’s central enough, but if you don’t want to walk to the river then you can take the metro two stops from Blaha Lujza tér.
There are 272 rooms, each with polished parquet floors and elegant chocolate colours – indeed, the main wall features padded brown squares that look like a bar of Bournville. The facilities are good, including free WiFi, hairdryer and laptop-sized safe. Some overlook the courtyard and others the street.
The lobby is lovely, with its doorway of beaten copper, its shiny marble flooring and its arched ceiling of coloured glass. A glass wall at the rear overlooks a pleasant courtyard, with basket chairs to relax in during the summer.
The ARAZ restaurant has a terrace, and serves traditional Hungarian dishes alongside modern international choices. It has an adjoining cocktail bar. Elsewhere there is a similarly swish café area on a ballustraded first-floor gallery above the lobby.
The hotel’s fitness centre is very good, with a range of cardio machines. The wellness centre has massage rooms, a Jacuzzi and a pool beneath skylights in the ceiling. There’s also an atmospheric outdoor swimming pool on the roof.
Business and leisure guests.
