Expert review of The Cavalaire
Charming owners and luxurious touches make this a thoroughly pleasant place to stay.
Stylish and comfortable but refreshingly unpretentious, the Cavalaire’s immaculate facilities have earned it Enjoy England’s coveted Four-Star Gold Award. But for me, it’s above all the warm, relaxed atmosphere that makes this one of the best of Brighton’s small hotels.
Location:
Upper Rock Gardens is a pleasant avenue lined with classic terraced houses dating back to the 1880s, with fine views down to the sea. The beach and Kemptown’s lively pubs, bars, restaurants and shops are all within easy strolling distance.
Bedrooms:
The décor is modern, but classic enough to sit comfortably with the Cavalaire’s Victorian fireplaces and bay windows. Jewel-coloured fabrics are a trademark – the beds are dressed with bright throws and luxurious piles of cushions. There are 10 rooms in all, including some small, inexpensive ones – good value if you’re not planning to spend much time in your room. The front-facing rooms are all much larger; for a special occasion you’ll want to treat yourself to Room 3, which has a high ceiling and a huge four-poster bed.

Public areas:
Fresh flowers, warm lighting and a lovely, exposed-brick hallway make you feel welcome right from the start. The downstairs living room is cosy by night and sunny at breakfast time. There’s free WiFi throughout.
Eating and drinking:
Everything about breakfast, from the fresh coffee or herbal infusions to the blow-out Full English, is delicious.
Service:
The Cavalaire’s friendly, down-to-earth owners, Garry and Derek, have a knack for making everyone feel at home.
