Expert review of Hotel-Pension Funk
This hotel, once the home of silent movie star Asta Nielsen, dates back to 1895. It was converted into a guesthouse in the 1950s but the building has retained much of its original appeal. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for something more intimate than a corporate or designer hotel.
The hotel enjoys a central Charlottenburg location, on a quiet, upmarket backstreet off a main shopping drag. The hotel is surrounded by beautiful buildings, art galleries and boutiques, and is directly opposite the well known Literaturhaus.
The 14 bedrooms are large, comfortable and feature elegant period pieces from the 1920s and 1930s. Rooms feature Art Nouveau windows, high decorative ceilings, dramatic carpets and satinwood beds with matching wardrobes. Bathrooms could probably use some renovating, however.
There are books, magazines and international newspapers available to borrow in the hall.
A buffet breakfast is included in the rates and though no evening meals are served, there are plenty of restaurants around the hotel to dine in. There is also a fridge stocked with reasonably-priced water and beer in the hallway.
Staff are very friendly and unobstrusive.
Budget conscious travellers, nostalgia lovers and creatives.
