Expert review of Hotel Askanischer Hof
If you prefer old-fashioned charm over modern design, I'd recommend trying out the Askanischer Hof. The place exudes an atmopshere of Alt-Berlin, with period rooms, Victorian-era decoration and vintage photos of previous guests on the walls. While it's not a hip hotel by any means, hipsters like David Bowie stayed here in the 1980s.
The Askanischer Hof is well-located on the famous Kurfürstendamm (Ku'damm) boulevard, a short walk from attractions like the KaDeWe daprtment store, the Berlin Zoo and several theatres.
The best way to describe the decor of the 16 bedrooms is...wonderfully eccentric. They're laden with a seemingly indiscriminate selection of antique furnishings, evoking the "glorious" 1920s with vintage photos, gramophones, Prussian desks and leather sofas. Rooms that overlook the Ku'damm benefit from having double-glazed windows to cut the noise down.

The hotel's hallways are atmospheric, featuring old drawings and photographs. There's a small area for book exchanges and a small courtyard out the back.
There are no restaurants here as such, but the substantial breakfast can be taken in the elaborately decorated dining room, with its gold-leaf stucco ceiling, velvet-covered chairs and embroidered tablecloths.
Service is wonderful. Hostess Eva Glinicke has been running the place for more than 40 years and knows a thing or two about making her guests comfortable, charmed and happy.
