Expert review of Heart Of Gold Hostel
A cheap and convivial downtown hostel with lots of organised activities.
Berlin is not short of hostels. But Heart of Gold goes the extra mile in terms of making guests feel welcome and a part of the city, and for that reason it gets an inclusion in my list.
Location:
First up, the hostel enjoys a prime location in Mitte. It's on a quiet side street, but just one block from bustling Oranienburger Straße and close to the Ramones Museum and plenty of bars, sights and restaurants.
Bedrooms:
Dorms - called ‘cabins’ - are very basic and won't appeal to anyone seeking character in their room - but the beds are comfortable and linen is provided at no extra cost. Dorm beds also come with a free locker to store your belongings and there are showers on every floor. Private rooms have their own showers and are slightly more approachable, decorated in bright and cheerful colours.

Public areas:
The hostel occupies a modern building and features numerous references to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The lobby is large and has a comfortable seating area, where guests naturally gather for chats and drinks, plus there are public computers and a reasonably priced bar.
Eating and drinking:
The bar serves cocktails at a magnanimous €2 on Friday and Saturday evenings between 7-9pm. And a generous buffet breakfast is available every morning and is free if you stay more than three nights.
Leisure facilities:
There are no leisure facilities in the hostel itself, but the staff are keen organisers and offer walking tours (free except for tips) and evening pub crawls where the fee gets you into several bars and clubs and a few drinks.
Service:
The staff at Heart of Gold are very helpful and friendly.
